We’ve compiled common women’s hair myths and truths and explained why one of our REGAINE® hair treatment products may be suitable for your hair loss.
Using vitamins, supplements and shampoos helps regrow hair.
MYTH: While many products claim to regrow hair, minoxidil-the active ingredient in REGAINE® solution 2% is the only clinically proven treatment for female pattern hair loss.4
Having a baby can cause hair loss.
True: But not permanently! Hormonal changes after childbirth can lead to hair loss. In such cases, hair eventually returns to normal.
Getting your hair cut makes your hair grow faster.
MYTH: Cutting the ends of your hair won’t affect how quickly your hair grows.
You only inherit hair loss from your mother.
MYTH: Female hair loss pattern can come from your mother OR your father and the pattern of inheritance is unpredictable.23. So even if your mother, father, and siblings experience hair loss, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will.
Extreme stress can trigger long-term hair loss.
MYTH: Extreme emotional or physical stress can cause telogen effluvium, a temporary condition in which you might notice more hair than normal coming out when shampooing or brushing.16 This kind of hair loss is temporary, and your hair will regrow within a short time once you resume your normal lifestyle.

True: 60% of women reported hair re-growth after 8 months of continual use of REGAINE® Solution 2%.3
REGAINE® Solution for Women won’t work on colour-treated hair.
False: You can have your hair dyed.3. REGAINE® Solution for Women reactivates your inactive follicles.4
All of your hair follicles are in place at birth.
True: From the day we are born, we have all of the hair follicles we’ll ever have. Hair follicles can become temporarily inactive and be revived, but if left untreated, they can lose their ability to grow hair completely.
The right shampoo can fix hair loss.
MYTH: No matter how great your volumising shampoo smells, it won’t regrow your hair. Some shampoos may leave your hair feeling thicker because they contain ingredients to temporary swell the hair shaft, but shampoos aren’t formulated to regrow your hair. Minoxidil, the active ingredient in REGAINE® Solution 2%, is the only clinically proven ingredient for hair regrowth in women.4
Shedding hair is abnormal.
MYTH: Hair shedding is a normal part of your hair’s growth cycle. A normal scalp can lose 30–150 hairs per day,16 and once the old hairs are shed, they’re replaced with new hair.
REGAINE® Solution for Women doesn’t work.
False: REGAINE® for Men and Women Solution 2% works by helping to reactive your inactive hair follicles.4 In clinical trials, 60 percent of women reported hair regrowth after 8 months of continual use of this product.3 You may need to use this product twice daily for 4 months before you see new hair growth.3

Hair loss will just go away.
Sometimes true: Some types of hair loss are temporary and do go away on their own, such as those caused by extreme stress or childbirth. However, the most common type of hair loss in women stems from hereditary causes and will continue if left untreated.20
